Learn About Kustom Auto Radio
In 1967 I moved to Dodge City with my family and as a young boy worked with my father in a two-way radio business. There were no cell phones. Two-way radio service was the only form of communications for farmers, police, fire department, and taxi cab companies.
As the business went on, farmers would bring in their AM tractor radio for repair. They were pretty insistent that I get it repaired for them as I was told “I have wheat to plant and the tractor is not moving until the radio is working.” Well, my dad sat me down and showed me how to repair an AM tractor radio as he did not have time.
Word got around that this young 14-year-old boy could bring this radio back to life. Well, this was his entertainment. No air conditioning or even a cab on the tractor. Wheels then began to turn in my head and I thought possibly there may be a need for entertainment in an automobile environment.
So, I started a business in Dodge City in 1971 and called it Kustom Auto Radio. I modeled it after a business in Wichita Kansas called Action Auto Radio — they did warranty service for radios for car dealerships so I did the same.
Then, in 1970, came the CB radio craze. This was the social media of the time. You could drive by the high school and see a CB antenna on about every other car. This was a big jump start for my venture on my way in to the Mobile Electronics Business that it has become today!
It has been a great ride, as we now are involved with cars that have as many as 20 onboard controllers that are on a network including your radio. This gives us unlimited capabilities to incorporate safety, entertainment and communication in our vehicles today. On the horizon are vehicles that drive themselves.
I am now 62 years old and wondering where will we be in the decades to come. I would like to thank all of the car dealers and loyal customers all over southwest Kansas and the surrounding area that have supported myself and my family over the years, and I hope to be your go to Full Service Mobile Electronic Specialist for your family for many years to come.
Sincerely, Phillip Cummins
